Buying great sake is a breeze in Japan, but, if you’re living in the U.S., you’ll likely have trouble finding the good stuff. Today, we’d like to introduce a few sites where you can buy the good stuff on the other side of the Pacific. For those who are in Japan, we’ll include some Amazon Japan links to some different bottles we recommend that can be found on each site. We aren’t affiliated with any of these sites; we just like good sake, and these are the sites that have it!

Tippsy Sake

As far as we can tell, Tippsy Sake is the gold standard for online sake shopping in the U.S.A. They have sake organized in just about every categorization you can imagine, so you can search by style, taste, price, brand, brewery, region, and even temperature!

Apparently, their number one bestseller is Dassai 45, forever the king of friendly, balanced, easy-to-recommend sake. Amongst their bestsellers is also Suigei’s Tokubetsu Junmai. Outside of that, we’re quite into their nama selection, particularly Shichi Hon Yari!

True Sake

This is a store that’s been around since 2002, so their claim to being the first dedicated shop in the U.S. rings true! They have recommended collections for beginners and explorers alike, and they also carry nama offerings, which we’re quite fond of as mentioned. We would recommend without hesitation Kaze No Mori, Tamagawa, Ohmine, and Kameizumi as brands we would home in on.

Sakaya NYC

“Sakaya” basically means “sake shop” in Japanese, although you’ll also see it translated as “liquor store” (sake just means “alcohol” after all). With that said, Sakaya is a New York City sake shop that’s been around since 2007 and carries a wonderful assortment of great sake. Looking at their selection, at a glance, we would point out Hakurakusei, Denshu, Taka, and Yoshinosugi Taruzake.

DC Sake Co.

DC Sake Co. was set up on 2020. They say that the “co” doesn’t stand for company but rather collaboration, community, and connection. Plus, they are woman-owned. We would check out KID, Kubota, and Tenmei.
